Damn, if any song deserves an official music video, then it is “White Blank Page” by Mumford & Sons. I cannot stop listening to this song, it is just incredible. Of course, it would help if the lyrics made any sense whatsoever and you can read about the ongoing storm over the meaning of the lyrics here and here as fans endeavour to interpret the song.
I have to admit, I think there is a very good chance that the lyrics are religious in nature, especially given the passion and intensity with which the band performs the song in this powerful video.
I doubt we’ll ever know what the band intended when they wrote the song (they seem to have kept pretty quiet about it so far) but that first line really resonates with me: “can you lie next to her and give her your heart… as well as your body?” So often we focus on women’s intentions in entering in to relationships but it is rare that anyone ever challenges a man to surrender to his emotions and expose his heart. Actually, that applies to both mean and women, now that I think about it.
I’m not sure that it matters. I listen to this song on repeat without really attaching any meaning to it. I think it is the intensity of conviction and emotion that appeals to me the most, and the fact that it is a superb track.
“White Blank Page” Lyrics
Mumford & Sons
Sigh No More (2009)
Can you lie next to her
And give her your heart, your heart
As well as your body
And can you lie next to her
And confess your love, your love
As well as your folly
And can you kneel before the king
And say I'm clean, I'm clean
Chorus:
But tell me now, where was my fault
In loving you with my whole heart
Oh tell me now, where was my fault
In loving you with my whole heart
A white blank page and a swelling rage, rage
You did not think when you sent me to the brink, the brink
You desired my attention but denied my affections, my affections
Chorus
Lead me to the truth and I will follow you with my whole life
Lead me to the truth and I will follow you with my whole life
